History often springs ironic surprises on us that capture the spirit and tectonics of the times in which we live. Last week a Russian hockey player broke the record establishing the highest number for goals in a career recorded by any player in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). Alekasandr Ovechkin’s 895th career goal, superseding the standing record held by Wayne Gretzky’s 894 goals, manifests some ironic meaning that has relevance beyond sports. That meaning extends to the great drama unfolding before us of Russia’s revival as a great power and the ‚new cold war‘ provoked by the West in an effort to deny Moscow great power status and any sphere of influence.
