Takeaways from the January 22nd US-Russian Talks in the Kremlin

It seems from the January 22nd talks in the Kremlin between US President Donald Trump’s negotiators, Steven Whitkoff and Jared Kushner, on the one hand, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, that the main sticking point remains the territorial issue—at least according to news reports and statements of various officials from all sides (https://strana.news/news/498920-chto-sejchas-proiskhodit-v-mirnom-protsesse.html). No side reported progress, though they report the constructive, extremely open nature of the discussions. The rather terse report on Kremlin’s website on the meeting — limited to the facts that a meeting occurred and who participated — suggests lack of movement (http://kremlin.ru/events/president/news/79028). I am inclined to think that the territorial issue is not the only stumbling block and that it is resolvable within months as a result of coming developments on the battlefield. ……..
