There is a revolution occurring in the US. It is not a revolution in the political science sense of a violent and/or anti-constitutional seizure of power by forces in society (revolution from below) or from within the state apparatus (revolution from above) intended to create a new social order and political regime (from authoritarian to republican or visa versa. Rather, it is a revolution in the sense of a complete reversal of the government’s political orientation and policies. The Trump ‘revolution’ would be an actual one in political science terms, if the Biden administration and Democrat Party-state had consolidated fully their attempt to create an authoritarian single-party dominant regime. But the victory of Donald S. Trump in the recent presidential elections, as well as the victories for the Republican Party in taking majorities in both houses, demonstrates the incompleteness of their hoped for revolution from above, spelling its demise or postponement. The Trump ‘revolution’ is therefore better understood as a comprehensive political, economic, and social reform program on the order of last USSR president and general secretary Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s perestroika (1985-1991).* Although there are obvious differences between the two contexts and processes, there are striking similarities which I offer below.
