US-Russian-Ukrainian Peace Talks: Abu Dhabi 2

The second round of trilateral US-Russian-Ukrainian peace talks at Abu Dhabi brought some small surprises, supporting modest optimism or, better said, at least modest hope for the ultimate course of the peace talks. However, the press of the Russian forces’ continuing destruction of the Ukrainian army, the near elimination of Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure, an impending financial crisis, and the growing divisions within the elite will affect the outcome. On the one hand, they place a stringent time constraint on achieving a negotiated peace, as Ukraine’s military defeat or utter collapse could obviate or prevent, respectively, any agreement. On the other hand, the press of war and its effects are concentrating minds in Kiev on an exit from the war—hence, the negotiations. ……………..

Dr. Hahn is the author of the new book: Russian Tselostnost’: Wholeness in Russian Thought, Culture, History, and Politics (Europe Books, 2022).
